The Facts of Lice.
Lice cannot jump or fly, they only crawl. They spread by crawling from one head of hair to another, or crawling from hair to a hat/scarf/pillow and onto another head of hair.
Most common in children ages 4 to 12.
Lice cannot live without a human. Without body temperature warmth, they only survive ~ 24 hours.
It is not a sign of disease or being dirty, or poor hygiene. They are not a health hazard and do not transmit disease-causing pathogens.
Your pets cannot get lice, only humans do.
How to get rid of lice in your home:
Head lice have to have a human to live, and can only survive 24 to 36 hours without a human head.
1. Use heat: wash recently worn clothing (including jackets, hats, scarves, headbands) and used bedding (pillowcases, sheets) in hot water and dry on high heat. Throw the stuffies in too. Lice cannot survive a temperature of 130 degrees F for more than 5 minutes. That's too hot to put on your head, but your clothes can handle it!
2. Bag items in plastic: If it cannot be washed, put it in a plastic bag for 2 weeks.
3. Vacuum: rugs, sofas, upholstery, furniture, and floors. Goal being to remove any hair that may have active lice eggs attached.
4. Clean Hair tools: soak brushes, combs, and other hair accessories in hot, soapy water for 10 minutes. Or better yet, purge and buy new.
